She proved to be very handy with the electric drill used to attach metal wall frames Meet Ana Vitria of Braga. Retired after teaching for over 30 years. The extensive news media coverage about the unusual house building project had sparked her interest. There is a continuing call for volunteers to come and give of their time. It was not certain how she might help but she was ready to take the first step. On Saturday after a week of work and helping people in need Ana Vitria joined Associao Humanitria Habitat for a celebration. It was the end of Building on Faith week. An opportunity to thank all those that have helped this project to came together with donations or work. Ana Vitria received her certificate and our thanks and guess who was ready to work the following Monday. Ana Vitria is one of the many volunteers, national and international, who have joined Associao Humanitria Habitat in its Palmeira project. The connection with HFHI has brought volunteers from several countries. On the site, one can hear different languages and share experiences from several countries. Ins and Pedro stand by each day to serve as translators when necessary. There are twelve houses to be built before the winter comes, and all help is welcome. Young ones, like Ana Vitria had taught, will not only have their own bedrooms for the first time, but they will be able to sleep in a house that is warm and safe. The Associao Humanitria Habitat is the Portuguese affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) a worldwide non-profit organization with headquarters in the United States. This is its first big project, with construction having started in June. As with all other projects of HFHI, families with children will be able to buy houses with no-interest loans and a modest monthly payment when they are finished. This is a hand-up and not a hand-out.
